Happy Birthday Stephen Stills: Reuniting With Buffalo Springfield In 2010

Today marks the 72st birthday of acclaimed musician Stephen Stills. A key figure in the early development of 1960s folk and psychedelic rock, his songwriting and guitar playing with the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inducted groups Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash helped propel those groups to international success.

Stills first came into public focus with Buffalo Springfield, alongside core members Neil Young, Richie Furay, Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin. The Los Angeles-based folk rock outfit survived long enough to issue three albums: a 1966 self-titled debut LP, 1967’s Buffalo Springfield Again and 1968’s Last Time Around. Conflicts and other issues within the influential band forced the members to go their separate ways, with Young later teaming with Stills in CSNY.

Young hosted a Buffalo Springfield reunion at his annual Bridge School Benefit concerts in 2010. Young, Stills and Furay – the lone surviving members of Buffalo Springfield reunited at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California on October 23 and 24. The pair of performances marked the first Buffalo Springfield shows since 1992 and shared similar setlists. “On the Way Home,” “Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing,” “Kind Woman” and other favorites were offered as acoustic arrangements. The band’s hit single, the Stills-penned “For What It’s Worth,” was also played each evening and they were joined by Pearl Jam, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne and others for Young’s “Rocking In The Free World” encore.
