Happy Birthday Phil Lesh: With The Q In 2000
By Andy Kahn Mar 15, 2016 • 1:04 pm PDT
Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh celebrates his 76th birthday today and if this year is anything like 2015, the septuagenarian is showing no signs of slowing down. Coming off appearances at last summer’s Fare Thee Well concerts and a slew of appearances with his Phil Lesh & Friends ensemble and other musicians associated with this Terrapin Crossroads venue in San Rafael, California – oh, and tackling bladder cancer – 2016 is already lining up to be just as memorable as last year was.
Back in 2000, the then 60-year-old Lesh unveiled The Quintet lineup of Phil & Friends that became known as “The Q.” With Phil on bass, the Q featuring guitarists Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes, keyboardist Rob Barraco and drummer John Molo will reassemble later this week at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. In advance of the birthday celebration concerts held on Thursday and Friday and in honor of Phil’s 76th birthday today, below is footage from the Fall 2000 tour that first saw The Q in action.
Video of the first set and the first two songs from the second set of the Phil & Friends show from October 9, 2000 is presented below. The night at the Beacon Theatre in New York City began with a nod to John Lennon with a performance of his “Imagine” on what would have been his 60th birthday. Check out video of the first set, which included a take on Phish’s “Wolfman’s Brother” as well as the opening “Shakedown Street” > “Just A Little Light” to start set two thanks to X1j5:
