Happy Birthday Butch Trucks: With BHLT In 1983

Veteran rock drummer Butch Trucks celebrates turning 69-years-old today. Born Claude Hudson Trucks in Jacksonville, Florida in 1947, the founding member of The Allman Brothers Band has been keeping time since the early 1960s with his signature freight train style. For Butch’s birthday, here’s a look back a short-lived supergroup he was part of back in the early 1980s.
Trucks was a member of BHLT – a supergroup composed of vocalist/saxophonist/harmonica player Jimmy Hall and Butch’s ABB mates Dickey Betts on guitar and Chuck Leavell on keyboards – that coalesced after The Allman’s disbanding in 1982. Joined by one-time ABB bassist David “Rook” Goldflies and guitarist/violinist Danny Parks, plans to record an album ultimately fizzled, as did the group after a few live performances.
Days before Trucks’ 36th birthday BHLT appeared together on May 7, 1983, for a show at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey. The set included Betts favorites like the opening “Ain’t Nothing You Can Do” and “Rain” as well as Allman staples such as “Ramblin’ Man,” “Jessica” and “Southbound.” Watch the full show thanks to the Music Vault below:
