Happy Birthday Bela Fleck | Dueling Banjos With A Computer

By Scott Bernstein Jul 10, 2014 2:10 pm PDT

Today, banjo maestro Bela Fleck turns 56. The NYC native is best known for his work with New Grass Revival and The Flecktones, but he’s also shared the stage with so many musicians from an incredibly diverse range of genres such as Jerry Garcia, Umphrey’s McGee, the Dave Matthews Band, Ginger Baker, Chick Corea, Bruce Hornsby, Abigail Washburn, Stanley Clarke, Steve Martin and Little Feat.

Fleck isn’t just the master of performing with other musicians, he’s also got a knack for collaborating with inanimate objects. In the early ’90s Fleck tackled “Dueling Banjos” with a Mac computer he had programmed with samples of himself playing for an episode of Dick Van Kleek’s Lonesome Pine Special.
