Guests A Plenty For First Phil Lesh Hootenanny At Terrapin Crossroads

Ever since Terrapin Crossroads opened in 2012, proprietor Phil Lesh has welcomed hundreds of musicians to its stages and many of them have returned numerous times. On Sunday, Terrapin Crossroads hosted its first-ever “Hootenanny,” which gave Phil a chance to assemble many of those musicians for what’s been described as a “celebratory event held at Terrapin Crossroads featuring some or all of the following: moonshine, straw hats, people ‘twirling’ socially, banjo, sing-a-longs and a Grateful Dead flag. Interestingly enough, it tends to be wild and uninhibited with rotating performers known and unknown, young and old.”

All in all, over 20 musicians graced The Grate Room stage at Terrapin Crossroads on Sunday over the course of two sets and an encore. The guests included members of The Terrapin Family Band, Tea Leaf Green, ALO, The Mother Hips, The Waybacks and many others. Guests would swap on-and-off between songs with Phil on stage for most of the evening.

The ensembles offered a mix of tunes from the Grateful Dead song book such as “Brown Eyed Women,” “Unbroken Chain,” “West L.A. Fadeaway” and “Mr. Charlie” with plenty of covers including The Band’s “Ophelia,” Flaming Lips’ “Are You A Hypnotist??,” “Happy” by The Rolling Stones and Neil Young’s “Down By The River.” All of the evening’s musicians shared the stage for the “Goin’ Down The Road Feelin’ Bad” encore that brought the first Hootenanny to a close.
