Greensky Bluegrass Debuts Phish & Grateful Dead Covers At The Caverns

Greensky Bluegrass had plenty of surprises in store for their debut at The Caverns in Pelham, Tennessee on Wednesday night. The band honored Robert Hunter by unveiling their cover of a Grateful Dead song he wrote with Jerry Garcia, debuted a geographically-appropriate Phish cover and welcomed Mimi Naja and Kyle Tuttle for guest spots at the underground venue.

The quintet kicked off the two-set affair with Joshua Davis’ “Dustbowl Overtures” on the Michigan singer-songwriter’s birthday. Next up was “Radio Blues” which was followed by Greensky’s first ever rendition of “Brokedown Palace.” GSBG covered the song just two days after Robert Hunter’s death. The concert continued with classic “Living Over,” more recent original “Do It Alone,” oldie “In Control” and the title track from this year’s All For Money.

Dobroist put down his instrument towards the end of the set and gave a narration for the day-appropriate “Casual Wednesday.” Beck explained the importance of Wednesday to Greensky and noted last night was the first “Casual Wednesday” underground. The band then tipped their hats towards the name of the venue by unveiling their rendition of the Phish classic “Cavern.” Mandolinist Paul Hoffman handled lead vocals on both “Brokedown Palace” and “Cavern.”

Greensky Bluegrass began the second set by pairing “Wish I Didn’t Know” and “Not Mine Anymore” as well as Davis’ “The Ghost Of Richard Manuel” and a cover of The Band’s “The Shape I’m In.” Banjoist Kyle Tuttle then emerged to augment the band on “I’d Probably Kill You,” “Worried About The Weather” and “Cryin’ Holy Unto The Lord (Rock Where Moses Stood).” A “Forget Everything” and “Broke Mountain Breakdown” sequence ended the frame. For the encore, Kyle Tuttle and Fruition’s Mimi Naja teamed with GSBG for Bob Dylan’s “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere.” Greensky last performed “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” back on November 2, 2018.
