Greensky Bluegrass began a two-night stand at The Anthem in Washington D.C. on Friday. The quintet welcomed opener Molly Tuttle and frequent collaborator Cris Jacobs in the first and second sets respectively.

Two-time Best Bluegrass Album Grammy-winner Molly Tuttle — the guitarist recently took home her second gold gramophone for her 2023 album City Of Gold — opened up the night where she was joined by Greensky members bassist Mike Devol and dobro player Anders Beck for portions of her set including on the title track to the album that won her first Grammy, Crooked Tree.

GSBG kicked off their first set with the title track to their latest studio album, Stress Dreams. The traditional “Reuben’s Train” and original “Reverend” came next. Following Stress Dreams’ “Until I Sing,” the band offered the 2024 debut of “Send Me Your Address From Heaven” by John Bailes.

Molly Tuttle then joined the quintet beginning with Stress Dreams cut “Give A Shit.” Featuring tasty dobro work from Beck, singer and mandolinist Paul Hoffman was the first to get on the solo action before Tuttle reeled off a twangy extended run. Next, Molly led GSBG on City of Gold’s “Castilleja.”

It was then time for a six-string extravaganza as the group vacated the stage save for Greensky guitarist Dave Bruzza and Molly Tuttle who delivered “I Told Them All About You.” Tuttle and Bruzza had previously teamed up for the song from country artist David Houston at the 2022 Portland, Maine edition of the traveling Levitate Flannel Jam Festival.

GSBG went it alone to wrap the first frame with “Worried About The Weather.” The second set began with Stress Dreams’ “New & Improved” followed by the “Bring Out Your Dead” sequence ahead of The Stanley Brothers’ bluegrass standard “How Mountain Girls Can Love.” A trio of Greensky original staples — “Past My Prime,” “Burn Them” and “Courage for the Road” — led up the the Cris Jacobs sit-in.

The frequent Greensky collaborator hailing from just up the road in Baltimore joined the band on electric guitar for GSBG’s “Lose My Way.” The sextet then delved into “Bone Digger,” a staple cover for Greensky from Jacob’s catalog.

Hoffman and Jacobs swapped verses and came together on the second chorus. Beck, exhibiting a crunchy over-driven tone, got the jam underway on dobro before banjo player Michael Bont soaked the five-string in phase. Phoff’s turn was next before Anders jumped back in for a run followed by Jacobs on the Fender Telecaster. The two guitarists then swapped riffage in a fiery exchange ahead of the song’s conclusion to seal the second set.
