Greensky Bluegrass Welcomes Jake Simpson & Debuts Jason Isbell Cover In Portland

Jamgrass quintet Greensky Bluegrass concluded a two-night stand at the Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon on Thursday night. The band has been on the road with The Lil Smokies and last night The Lil Smokies’ fiddler Jake Simpson sat-in joined Greensky for a couple of tunes in each set.

GSBG began Thursday’s show by moving back and forth between “Tarpology” and “One Slip.” Then, Simpson emerged to add to the Greensky debut of Jason Isbell’s “Different Days” and a cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “White Freightliner Blues.” The five-piece went at it alone to end the first set with the beloved “Windshield,” rarities “Grow Bananas” and “New Rize Hill” and the pairing of “In Control” and “Can’t Stop Now.”

The second set got underway with “New Barns” and later saw Simpson come back out for a tease-filled “For Sure, Uh Huh” and a cover of Paul Simon’s “Gumboots.” Next, the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” for Greensky dobroist Anders Beck. Last night’s closing stanza concluded with a sequence that included GSBG’s second cover of the Grateful Dead’s “China Cat Sunflower” of 2018. Greensky ended the night by serving up a rendition of John Hartford’s “Steam Powered Aeroplane” as the encore.
