Greensky Bluegrass appeared on the latest episode of JamBase partner Osiris Media’s podcast Inside The Musician’s Brain hosted by banjo player Chris Pandolfi. Chris recently had a chance to sit down with most of GSBG in Louisville, Kentucky while The Infamous Stringdusters were on winter tour with them earlier this year to talk about Greensky’s 2022 album Stress Dreams and more.

Pandolfi began the podcast by talking about the significance of The Infamous Stringdusters Grammy nomination for their 2021 album A Tribute To Bill Monroe along with some insights on the state of bluegrass music past and present. The conversation with Greensky — which saw members breaking down a song on the album — got underway with mandolinist Paul Hoffman discussing how Stress Dreams songs have translated into a live setting.

Pandolfi followed up with an interesting question about how Greensky tackled rehearsing the songs for live shows as opposed to in the studio as the album was tracked a year ahead of the tour.

“We had to relearn it all, which was some work,” Hoffman revealed. “We kind of spaced it out..we learned a couple…for the Denver shows before the tour and then a couple more for the tour. Daily, we’re kind of still running stuff. And we’re working on a lot of transitions too. We haven’t been playing any covers…so we’ve had to kind of rework a lot of our transitions and jams, because a lot of that happens in covers we play. So it’s been cool to try to creatively figure out ways that our songs go together.”

Paul then broke down the Stress Dreams song, “Give A Shit,” which he calls a “lyrical word game.” The deep dive into the album continues with bassits Mike Devol talking about the title track, which amazingly is the first song he ever wrote, and Dave Bruzza detailing his “Streetlight.” The podcast concludes with fellow banjoists Panda and GSBG’s Michael Bont talking shop on the five-string, with instruments in hand, as well as discussing the banjo work on “Absence Of Reason.”
