Greensky Bluegrass and Holly Bowling continued their 6reensky run at The Pageant in St. Louis on Thursday, Groundhog Day. The sextet aptly honored the holiday by busting out “Groundhog.”
The Pageant holds a special place in the band’s history as it’s where they filmed their Leap Year Sessions pandemic livestream series and the band had some tricks up their sleeve for the concert at the venue on Thursday. First up, the aforementioned “Groundhog.” A number of artists have recorded or covered the traditional tune over the years including bluegrass legends like Doc Watson and The Dillards.
Led by guitarist Dave Bruzza, Greensky last played the song on May 28, 2021 for a total gap of 143 shows, as per Phantasy Tour. The last time GSBG played “Groundhog” on Groundhog Day came in Washington D.C. in 2018. Watch 6reensky dust off “Groundhog” below:
Other first set highlights included former tour managers Trey Kerr and Guido Batista on woodblock during “Fixin’ To Ruin.” After an extensive “Last Winter In The Copper Country,” The title track from GSBG’s 2019 LP, All For Money, wrapped the first frame.
6reensky began the second set with a pairing of “All Four” and a massive “Don’t Lie,” clocking in at nearly 222 minutes. Second set covers included John Hartford’s “Steam Powered Aeroplane” and Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs,” the latter concluding the set. On Wednesday, news came through that Black Sabbath founding frontman Ozzy Osborne is retiring from touring. But 6reensky wasn’t done yet, the band returned to encore with a bust out of Jimmy Martin’s “Drink Up And Go Home,” last time played on July 27, 2021 for a gap of 123 shows.
The 6reensky run rolls into Chicago tonight where it will conclude on Saturday.
