Grateful Doe Identified After 20 Years

In 1995 a man was found dead at the site of a Emporia, Virginia car wreck wearing a Grateful Dead t-shirt and with two tickets to a Dead show in his pocket. The man was unable to be identified leading officials to dub him “Grateful Doe.” After 20 years Grateful Doe was finally identified thanks to DNA testing as Myrtle Beach Online reports the man’s name is Jason Callahan and that he was a resident of Myrtle Beach.

Jason’s family, who finally filed a missing person’s report this past January, were informed of the news yesterday and when reached for comment by Myrtle Beach Online declined to comment. As noted by Deadheadland, flyers trying to help solve the mystery were circulated at Dead-related concerts and festivals for years. A Facebook group founded in 2012 with a community numbering over 13,000 has also tried to figure out just who “Grateful Doe” was. Jason Callahan was 20 years old.
