The Grateful Dead shared video of “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” as the latest in their All The Years Live series. The footage is from Denver’s Mile High Stadium on June 28, 1991.

The Grateful Dead’s debut of “Mississippi Half-Step” came on July 16, 1972 at Dillon Stadium in Hartford, Connecticut, as per JerryBase. The premiere of the stellar song may have been overshadowed a bit by an epic sit-in to conclude the second set when founding Allman Brothers Band members Gregg Allman, Berry Oakley, Jaimoe and Dickey Betts joined for “Not Fade Away” > “Goin’ Down The Road Feelin’ Bad” > “Hey Bo Diddley.”

“Mississippi Half-Step” remained a steady staple for GD from 1972 onward, as Dead archivist David Lemieux pointed out in his notes accompanying the Mile High video.

“From mid-1972, and a standout on the Grateful Dead’s 1973 studio masterpiece Wake Of The Flood, “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” was played live nearly 250 times by the Grateful Dead, with most versions after 1976 coming as a show-opener.”

“Mississippi Half-Step” was, however, slotted in thrid in Denver on June 28, 1991. The ’91 lineup featured the double keyboard attack of Bruce Hornsby and Vince Welnick who also added vocals on the chorus and joined Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh — over thunderous fills from Rhythm Devils Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart — on the Rio Grande-O sing along.
