Grateful Dead Performs ‘Cassidy’ in 1991
The Grateful Dead hit Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on June 17, 1991 where they would perform the John Barlow/Bob Weir collaboration “Cassidy” as the penultimate song of the first set. The lineup for the show featured guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh, drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann as well as the double keyboard attack of Bruce Hornsby and Vince Welnick.
“Since 1976, this Weir-Barlow classic was a part of Grateful Dead first sets until 1995,” wrote Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux. “This dynamic, dynamite version is one of the many highlights of this magnificent show. Bruce in particular adds some tremendously tasty nuanced sonic colors to this terrific version.”
The Grateful Dead also announced a box set — Giants Stadium 1987, 1989, 1991 — documenting three years of shows at Giants Stadium due out September 27 via Rhino. In the meantime, the band has shared the performance of “Cassidy” from the iconic Dead venue as part of their All The Years video series. Check it out below:
