Behold Newly Remastered Footage Of Grateful Dead’s Buffalo 1990 Concert Featuring 1080p Video & UltraSBD Audio

Keyboardist Brent Mydland shines on “Blow Away,” “Gimme Some Lovin” and more during one of the last concerts he’d play before his tragic death.

The Grateful Dead brought their Summer Tour 1990 to the Buffalo area on July 16th, a special day for the region. July 16th is 716 Day, named after Western New York’s area code. Previously circulating pro-shot video footage of the concert held at Rich Stadium in Buffalo suburb Orchard Park has been freshly remastered and paired with audio wiz Charlie Miller’s transfer of an Ultra Matrix Soundboard recording captured by the Dead sound engineer Dan Healy. The result is stunning video of a stellar Grateful Dead show which can be viewed below.

Guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir were joined in the Grateful Dead at the time of the Buffalo 1990 concert by keyboardist Brent Mydland, bassist Phil Lesh and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. Tragically, Mydland died 10 days later at his home in Lafayette, California at the way-too-young age of 37 due to a drug overdose. The Grateful Dead’s visit to Rich Stadium was followed by two nights at Deer Creek in Indiana and a three-night stand at the Chicagoland venue World Music Theatre to end the tour.

Brent Mydland had a few shining moments at Rich Stadium on July 16, 1990. The keyboardist led his bandmates through the final “Blow Away,” a tune he co-wrote with lyricist John Perry Barlow. Additionally, Brent and Bob Weir co-helmed “Man Smart (Woman Smarter)” before Mydland shared lead vocal duties with Phil Lesh on “Gimme Some Lovin” during the second set.

Other highlights include the “Mind Left Body Jam” that develops out of a pre-“Drums” version of “Truckin’,” a split “Sugar Magnolia”/”Sunshine Daydream” to bookend the second set and gorgeous takes on “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo,” “The Wheel,” “Wharf Rat” and “Brokedown Palace.”
