Watch Goose Cover Grateful Dead’s ‘U.S. Blues’ On 4th Of July In Asbury Park

Goose completed a two-show run at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, New Jersey on Tuesday night. The Fourth Of July performance featured the band’s debut cover of “U.S. Blues” by the Grateful Dead as well as their first time playing “Wild Summer Nights” by John Cafferty.

“U.S. Blues” had previously been performed by Goose precursor band Vasudo. The song has also been played by guitarist Rick Mitarotonda, keyboardist/guitarist Peter Anspach and percussionist/bassist Jeff Arevalo during shows for their side project Orebolo. Additionally, Mitarotonda was part of two Phil Lesh & Friends lineups that performed “U.S. Blues.”

Derived from the short-lived song “Wave That Flag,” the patriotic “U.S. Blues” appeared on the Grateful Dead’s 1974 album, Wake Of The Flood. The song was a staple of the band’s live repertoire, appearing over 300 times between 1974 and 1995. Watch Goose performing “U.S. Blues” on the Fourth Of July:

Goose followed the Dead cover debut by starting the second set with their first public performance of “Wild Summer Nights” by John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band. The song was written for the 1983 feature film Eddie and the Cruisers, which is set in New Jersey and tells the story of the fictional titular band.
