Grateful Dead At Columbia University In 1968
May 3, 1968 was a tumultuous time for Columbia University students. Days earlier police had violently squashed a student protest that led to 148 injuries and an astounding 372 police brutality complaints. Enter the Grateful Dead who performed a free outdoor concert for students at the NYC institution.
Footage of the Grateful Dead’s free set was filmed and has been posted to YouTube with audio from other performances. Earlier this month – as first noted by SongMango – an upgraded clip from the set featuring sync’d audio and video was uploaded to YouTube by Voodoonola. We get to see an early version of the band perform parts of “Cryptical Envelopment” and “The Other One” in the nine- minute video. Take a look:
