Listen To Gov’t Mule’s Guest-Filled Woodstock 50th Anniversary Tribute

One of the highlights of this past weekend’s Mountain Jam music festival was a Gov’t Mule late night performance on Saturday in honor of the 50th anniversary of the original Woodstock festival. An audience recording of the guest-filled set has surfaced and can be streamed below.

Mountain Jam’s new home of Bethel Woods in Bethel, New York is located on the same site where Woodstock took place August 15 – 18, 1969. Gov’t Mule paid tribute to the legendary event by performing songs played at Woodstock starting with Richie Havens’ “Freedom.” The opener featured just Mule frontman Warren Haynes and Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real percussionist Tato Melgar. The rest of the band came out to join Warren and Tato on “Jingo” by Santana. When the other members of Mule emerged it was drummer John Molo who appeared and was behind the kit for the set as Gov’t Mule’s Matt Abts was ill.

Gov’t Mule went it alone for The Who’s “The Hawker” and “Listening To You” as well as Ten Years After’s “I Can’t Keep From Crying Someetimes.” Then, Lukas Nelson guested with the quartet on The Band’s “This Wheel’s On Fire,” the Grateful Dead’s “Dark Star,” CSNY’s “Find The Cost Of Freedom” and Buffalo Springfield’s “Mr. Soul.” Next, Warren starred on “I Put A Spell On You” before Sister Sparrow sang “Piece Of My Heart.” A bevy of backing singers and harmonica wiz Jackson Kincheloe then emerged for Sly & The Family Stone’s “I Want To Take You Higher.” The backing singers stuck around for the “With A Little Help From Friends” finale.
