Gov’t Mule Goes Without Matt Abts In Milwaukee

Gov’t Mule was a man down at Pabst Theater in Milwaukee on Thursday, as drummer Matt Abts missed the show due to a stomach virus. Warren Haynes, Danny Louis and Jorgen Carlsson went on with the concert to make for an interesting night in Milwaukee.

Haynes started the night with solo renditions of his own “The Real Thing” and the Eagles’ “Wasted Time.” Then, Louis and Carlsson emerged for “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen, Mule original “Banks Of The Deep End” and “Kind Of Bird” from Warren’s time in The Allman Brothers Band. The marathon set continued with help from drum tech/drummer/percussionist Rachel “Stixx” Turner on djembe for a run of “Sad & Deep As You,” Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic” and The Doors’ “Endless Parade.”

Carlsson moved over to drums as Louis held down bass duties for Jimi Hendrix’s “Red House” and Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning.” Jorgen and Danny then switched positions for covers of the Beatles’ “She Said, She Said” and Cream’s “Politician.” Haynes, Carlsson and Louis went on to take their normal positions and Turner played drums for the set-closing sequence of “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” and “Soulshine.” Stixx also was behind the kit for the evening’s lone encore of “Get Behind The Mule” by Tom Waits.
