Gov’t Mule played the penultimate show of a run featuring Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs as support on Tuesday in Durham, North Carolina. Last night’s concert at Durham Performing Arts Center saw Mike Campbell and three of his bandmates guest with Mule as part of Warren Haynes and company’s marathon set. Collaborations included Gov’t Mule debut covers of Tom Petty and Bob Dylan classics.
Haynes, bassist Jorgen Carlsson, drummer Matt Abts and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis kicked off the Mule set with the tender “Traveling Tune.” The quartet then dug in on oldies “Game Face” and “Little Toy Brain” before working through “Wake Up Dead” from their latest studio album, 2021’s Heavy Load Blues. Next came a rousing rendition of the original “Larger Than Life” featuring a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “If 6 Was 9” within. Life Before Insanity gem “No Need To Suffer” paved the way for the sit-ins to begin.
Up first was the Mule premiere of Bob Dylan’s “Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)” featuring former Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers/current Fleetwood Mac guitarist Mike Campbell on guitar and his Dirty Knobs bandmate Lance Morrison replacing Carlsson on bass. Haynes handled lead vocals on a song Dylan initially issued on the 1978 studio album Street-Legal. Campbell and Haynes each took multiple solos on a cover stretched out for nearly eight minutes.

Mike Campbell stuck around, drummer Matt Laug took Abts’ spot behind the kit and Chris Holt played acoustic guitar as “The Dirty Mule” took on Tom Petty’s “You Wreck Me.” Campbell helmed the version of a tune Petty recorded for 1994’s Wildflowers. Mike and Warren went toe-to-toe in exchanging riffs throughout the jam that developed out of the Mule debut “You Wreck Me” cover.

Gov’t Mule returned to their normal formation and went sans guests for a “Broke Down On The Brazos” that bled into a “Tributary Jam.” Laug then jumped back on drums with Chris Holt joining Haynes on guitar as the five musicians played Ann Peebles’ version of “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home.” Mule tacked on favorites “Blind Man In The Dark” and “Mr. Man” to close the set and said farewell with a triumphant “Soulshine” encore. Knoxville, Tennessee hosts the Mule/Dirty Knobs finale tonight.
