Gov’t Mule Finishes Island Exodus 2020 With Guest-Filled Concert
Gov’t Mule closed out their Island Exodus 2020 destination event at Jewel Paradise Cove in Runaway Bay, Jamaica on Wednesday night with a little help from their friends. The band’s final concert of the event was moved indoors after storms rolled through the area all day, yet the show went on as Hot Tuna and Ron Holloway were among Mule’s guests.
The quartet followed the opening pairing of “Hammer & Nails” and “Slackjaw Jezebel” by working “When The Levee Breaks” into “I Think You Know What I Mean.” Next came “Which Way Do We Run?” before saxophonist Ron Holloway emerged for Gov’t Mule’s first cover of moe..’s “Opium” since August 25, 2016 and “Reblow Your Horn.” Then, Mule dusted off “Slow Happy Boys” after more than two years with assistance from Hot Tuna bassist Jack Casady. Another huge bust out followed as GM’s cover of “Help Me” by Sonny Williamson returned for the first time since November 9, 2013. Casady and Jorma Kaukonen guested with the four-piece for a rendition that included “Good Morning Schoolgirl” within to close the set.
Gov’t Mule kicked off the second set with a run of “Unring The Bell,” “Endless Parade” and “Soulshine.” Next, Hot Tuna drummer augmented the quartet on “Come & Go Blues.” Later, vocalists Machan Taylor and Mini Carlsson added to “Million Miles From Yesterday” before Mule worked “Beautifully Broken” into a jam on the Dead’s “The Other One” featuring Holloway. Ron was also on hand for “Sco-Mule” and “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” to end the frame. For the encore, Gov’t Mule was joined by Tyler Ramsey for Beatles’ classic “Yer Blues.”
