Gov’t Mule Battles With Rain In Delaware & Delivers A Set Heavy On Covers
For the second night in a row Gov’t Mule had to deal with the wrath of Mother Nature. On Tuesday the start of band’s set in upstate New York was delayed for nearly two hours. On Wednesday night the venerable jam act had to pause their set three songs in at The Freeman Stage at Bayside in Selbyville, Delaware because of heavy rain, but later returned for a jam-heavy set full of covers.
Warren Haynes & Co. got their night going in the Blue Hen State with “Hammer & Nails” from 2002’s The Deep End, Vol. 2. The four-piece act would then deliver takes on “Thorazine Shuffle” and “Mule” before having to take a break as heavy rain came through the open-air performing arts venue. When the show got going again Mule picked things up with “Soulshine.” The fan-favorite that dates back Haynes’ days in the Allman Brothers Band segued into Ann Peebles’ “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” from the soul singer’s 1972 release Straight From the Heart. Old-school classic “Trane” kicked off a lengthy jam-filled stretch. Mahavishnu Orchestra’s “Eternity’s Breath” came next with the quartet offering up a jam on the Grateful Dead’s “St. Stephen” before dropping in a cover of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “Breakdown” in the middle of “Beautifully Broken” with “Stone Cold Rage” finishing off the powerful run.
“Sco-Mule” featured a tease on Santana’s “Oye Como Va” with Mule once again looking to the Allman Brothers’ catalog for “Come & Go Blues.” The jam titans looked to The Beatles psychedelic era next delivering “She Said, She Said” and “Tomorrow Never Knows” before closing out the set with “Blind Man In The Dark.” Gov’t Mule brought their rainy night in Delaware to a close with “Traveling Tune” from their most recent studio album Revolution Come…Revolution Go.
