Buddy Guy Celebrates 90th Birthday At Radio City With John Mayer, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks & More

Buddy Guy celebrated his 90th birthday at a sold-out Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Thursday. The all-star tribute, Buddy’s Got The Blues: A 90th Birthday Concert Celebration, brought together guests including John Mayer, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Joe Bonamassa, Eric Gales, Shemekia Copeland and Bobby Rush.

As reported by The Associated Press, the performers were backed by a house band led by The Rolling Stones drummer Steve Jordan, who served as the evening’s music director.

Guy opened the night on acoustic guitar with Derek Trucks and Isaiah Shirley joining him on John Lee Hooker’s “I’m In The Mood.” Guy later teamed with Copeland on a duet of “Rock Me Baby” and played Slim Harpo’s “I’m a King Bee.”

Mayer and Tedeschi performed Otis Redding’s “I’ve Got Dreams to Remember.” Mayer and Guy also played an unnamed funky new song from Guy’s new Steve Jordan-produced album, set for release in 2027. Tedeschi and her husband Derek Trucks contributions also included takes on “Messin’ with the Kid” and “All Your Love.”

Gales and Bonamassa jammed on Jimmy Reed’s “Baby What You Want Me to Do.” Christone “Kingfish” Ingram and Robert Randolph joined Guy for Tommy McClennan’s “Cross Cut Saw Blues” and Elmore James’ “Shake Your Money Maker.” Kenny Wayne Shepherd linked with Guy for “Let Me Love You Baby” as a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Billy F Gibbons, Gary Clark Jr., Ally Venable, Doyle Bramhall II, Kim Wilson and Ivan Neville were also among the musicians who took the Radio City stage.

The full cast of participants came out at the end to close the night with “Got My Mojo Workin’.”

“This is the greatest day I ever had in my life,” Guy said.
