Goose spent three days last week in Colorado, playing sold-out shows on Thursday and Friday at Red Rocks outside Denver and on Saturday at Colorado State University’s West Lawn at Lory Student Center in Fort Collins. Friday’s show at Red Rocks featured a debut cover performance of Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U.”
After selling out Red Rocks on Thursday, Goose came back on Friday for a second sold-out evening at the scenic outdoor venue. The “I Would Die 4 U” premiere came in the middle of a seven-song first set. The first Prince cover performed by Goose to date was sung by guitarist Rick Mitarotonda. The band stretched out the cover debut, jamming the otherwise concise pop song out beyond its typical structure.
Watch audience-shot video footage of Goose debuting a cover of Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U” at Red Rocks below:
Leading up to the cover debut, Goose initiated Friday’s first set with a fast rendering of “Echo Of A Rose.” The action continued with “Mr. Action” and “Lead Up,” which led up to the cover debut. After The Purple One premiere, the rest of the first set was filled in by “Everything Must Go,” the slow melodic arrangement of “All I Need” and the closer “Yeti.”
A pair of monster jams bookend the second set, which began with a 24-minute “Thatch” and ended with a 25-minute “Factory Fiction.” Between those improvisational expeditions, Goose worked up covers of David Gray’s “Please Forgive Me” and 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up” around a “Borne” into “Hungersite” pairing.

Amidst the momentous occasion of the sold-out weekend on the rocks, guitarist/keyboardist Peter Anspach took a moment to speak to the audience during “What’s Up.”
“What’s up Red Rocks?,” Anspach said. “I’ll tell ya, sometimes when I get up here, I feel very nervous, but you guys make that all OK. So thank you so much. And I’ll tell you what: live music, it’s the truth. Thanks for letting us do what we do up here being silly and being ourselves – it means so much. On behalf of everybody give yourselves a big round of applause. Thank you so much!”
Friday’s encore at Red Rocks was an adventurous “Dripfield.” Listen to an official recording of the entire concert via nugs.net:
