Goose rang in the New Year at The Riviera Theatre in Chicago on Friday. The Connecticut quintet served up a bevy of original favorites along with some choice covers over the course of three sets.
Goose opened up the show with a characteristically deep “Arrow” that contained a driving jam with some guitar fireworks from Rick Mitarotonda before the band settled into a groove that escalated into a disco-tinged rave up punctuated once again by Rick before the band cooled things down with a segue into “Rosewood Heart.” Keyboardists/guitarist Peter Anspach then led the way through “White Lights” which also saw a shimmering piano solo from Peter. Next, the quintet grooved into “The Old Man’s Boat” ahead of Santo & Johnny Farina’s “Sleepwalk” — last time played on October 19, 2019 — to close out the first frame.
A cover of Vampire Weekend’s “2021,” which the band recorded for the VW curated EP 40:42 EP kicked off the second set and stretched nearly as long as the original, which clocked in at exactly 21 minutes and 21 seconds, at 19 minutes. “Flodown” from Gooses 2021 album Shenanigans Nite Club followed before the quintet delivered the Grateful Dead’s “One More Saturday Night” — last time played on December 11, 2019 — to preface set two closer “Arcadia.”
“Wysteria Lane” launched the third frame and headed into the Elton John/Tim Rice Lion King soundtrack classic “Circle Of Life.” The cover — which featured Goose manager Jon “Coach” Lombardi on a giant rainstick — saw action for just the third time with the last play coming during Goosemas 4 in 2017 after the band debuted the song at their very first concert on September 27, 2014. The countdown began as “Circle Of Life” concluded.
Coach stayed on the rainstick for the first song of 2022, “The Empress Of Organos,” and also utilized percussion on Jeffrey Arevalo’s kit. Goose then took “Creatures” on a 23-minute excursion which contained teases of Harold Faltermeyer’s iconic synth number “Axel F” from the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. “Seekers On The Ridge Parts 1 & 2” closed out the final frame. Goose returned to encore with “So Ready” to bring the NYE concert to a close.
