Goose presented a one of a kind experience to an intimate crowd on Tuesday at the Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy exhibit at The Shed in New York City. The band played an 80-minute, all-improv set with guest Stuart Bogie on woodwinds, but that was just one element of what made the night special.
Luna Luna, accurately billed as “the world’s first art amusement park,” was dreamed up by artist André Heller. Salvador Dali, David Hockney, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring were among the contemporary artists who contributed their work to its attractions. The fairground debuted in Hamburg in 1987 with plans for a worldwide tour to follow.
Sadly, a few years after the initial three-month presentation in Hamburg, legal issues led to the contents of Luna Luna being stuffed into 44 shipping containers, where they remained until a team of new investors breathed new life into the project. The attractions were unpacked and lovingly restored with approximately half of the original 30 displayed at a revived Luna Luna exhibit that ran in Los Angeles from December 2023 through the following spring. Then, last November, Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy made its way to The Shed for the current exhibit. The once-forgotten art carnival is on view in NYC through this Sunday, March 16.

Goose partnered with Luna Luna to host the event on Tuesday in celebration of the band’s upcoming album, Everything Must Go, which arrives on April 25. The stunning artwork for the LP was created by Brian Blomerth. Costumed characters based on the cover art greeted attendes as they entered Luna Luna and interacted with fans at various spots within the exhibit.
Producer Abe Seiferth created music spun before and after Goose’s performance and incorporated stems from Everything Must Go into his modular DJ synth performance. A listening station was available, where attendees could listen to vinyl of the forthcoming album.
Goose’s Everything Must Go Experience at Luna Luna opened at 7 p.m. The quartet and Bogie took the stage just after 8:30 p.m., which gave fans plenty of time to explore the impressive exhibit featuring additional elements designed by META founder and new Goose creative partner Justin Bolognino.
A stage was setup in the middle of the main space, where Goose performed in the round. The versatile and extremely talented Stuart Bogie, a former member of Antibalas who has shared the stage with a who’s who of musical acts, moved between saxophones and clarinet over the course of the performance. Bogie previously sat-in with Goose during the band’s June 24, 2022 concert at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall.
The music itself was highly experimental, as was billed and to be expected. Guitarist Rick Mitarotonda sang several autotune-enhanced lyrics based on one line poems attendees contributed to one of the costumed characters such as “want to feel weightless” and “I’m just here for the zipline,” which as Ryan Storm noted was a quote from the sketch comedy show I Think You Should Leave.
Mitarotonda, Bogie, bassist Trevor Weekz, keyboardist Peter Anspach and drummer Cotter Ellis varied tempos, progressions and keys throughout. Standout moments included a particularly dark and heavy-hitting segment in which Mitarotonda shredded, a beautiful blissful jam and peak-laden final progession. Goose brought in a scaled-back light rig and attractions like the Basquiat-painted ferris wheel and Arik Brauer-designed carousel would come to life to augment the music.
All in all, Goose delivered on the promise of an immersive experience. Kudos to the band for putting on such an out-of-the-box event.
