Goose Unveils ‘Low Rider’ At New Year’s Eve Run Opener In Austin

Goose launched their two-night New Year’s Eve run at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas on Monday. Night one of the “formal affair” saw the quintet offering a first-time play of the WAR classic “Low Rider.”

Donning masquerade masks and dressed in black, guitarist Rick Mitarotonda, keyboardist/guitarist Peter Anspach, bassist Trevor Weekz, percussionist Jeff Arevalo and drummer Cotter Ellis kicked off the concert with the new tune “Big Modern!” Goose debuted the song on September 1 during their 2024 Fall Tour kickoff in New Jersey, as per ElGoose.net.

Fan-favorite “Animal” followed ahead of “Dr. Darkness.” Another song debuted in Jersey earlier this year, “Draconian Meter Maid,” gave way to “Silver Rising.” Next, “Jive II” and set-closer “Arrow” marked the only songs in the first set debuted before 2022.

The quintet kicked off the second frame with “Hot Love & The Lazy Poet.” While Goose first played the song at The Capitol Theatre in April, “Hot Love & The Lazy Poet” originated in the proto-Goose band Vasudo and dates back over a decade.

Staple “Arcadia” emerged from “Hot Love & The Lazy Poet” ahead of “Red Bird,” which in turn flowed into the debut of “Low Rider.” Rick and Peter teamed for harmonies on the cut from War’s 1975 album Why Can’t We Be Friends? with Mitarotonda reeling off the iconic melody.

Following an electro “Low Rider” jam and a big peak, Goose dropped into “Sinnerman,” done in the style of Nina Simone, to seal the second set. The band would return to encore with yet another new tune, “Give it Time.”
