Goose Offers Multiple Song Sandwiches In Athens

On Tuesday Goose made their debut at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia. The fifth stop of the band’s spring tour saw the group weave a “Trevor Reads Poetry” segment within “The Empress Of Organos” to end the first set and play a “Hot Tea” that encapsulated “Turned Clouds” to close the second set.

The quintet opened with an adventurous “Tumble” that stretched for nearly 20 minutes. Goose then expertly jammed their own “Time To Flee” into a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Green River.” Next came the rollicking “Flodown” along with a pair of songs debuted in 2022 – “Thatch” and “Silver Rising.” The former was expanded beyond its normal boundaries for the first time. Bassist Trevor Weekz was spotlight during the set-closing “The Empress Of Organos” for “Trevor Reads Poetry.” Weekz recited a bit of Peaches’ breakthrough 2000 song “Fuck The Pain Away” before the band picked up where they left off in “Organos.”

Goose launched last night’s second set with a crowd-pleasing “Arcadia.” Rick Mitarotonda linked one effusive riff after another to build the jam to a strong peak. The five-piece then treated fans to a 20-minute “Slow Ready” featuring expansive improvisation. Next, percussionist Jeff Arevalo handled lead vocals on The Clash’s “Rock The Casbah.”

The Clash cover was followed by beloved staple “Hot Tea.” Goose swerved into and out of “Turned Clouds” during the set closer. Multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach delivered a tasty electric piano solo in which he teased “After Midnight” within the “Hot Tea” jam. The quintet went the yacht rock route by performing Rupert Holmes’ “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” as the encore in Athens.
