Psychedelic rockers Garcia Peoples will issue their third full-length studio album, One Step Behind, via Beyond Beyond is Beyond on October 18. The sextet previewed the LP with a “single edit” of the 32-minute title track.
Garcia Peoples recorded their second album of 2019 and third in 15th months at Black Dirt Studio with Jason Meagher. The band was joined by guitarist Tom Malach’s father, saxophonist Bob Malach (Stevie Wonder, Barbra Streisand) on the expansive title track. One Step Behind consists of just two songs, the 32-minute title track and the eight-minute “Heart And Soul.” The forthcoming LP marks the studio debut of bassist Andy Cush, who as journalist Jesse Jarnow notes in a statement announcing One Step Behind “occupies the bass chair for most of the band’s shows.”

“The 32-minute title cut highlights the twin guitars and songwriting of Tom Malach and Danny Arakaki and, instead of pointing itself towards one possible future for the band, just zaps itself square into the thick of it,” wrote Jarnow. “Encompassing a range of moods and scenes in one flowing arc (plus a coda), it’s less a piece of music to listen to than it is a zone to occupy, a portal for all open-eared heads.”
