Full Show Friday | Phil Lesh Quintet With Willie Nelson

By Scott Bernstein Aug 22, 2014 12:00 pm PDT

In 2000 Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh assembled a band known to fans by either the moniker The Phil Lesh Quintet or simply The “Q,” that featured guitarists Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes, keyboardist Rob Barraco and drummer John Molo. The band was a force of nature and was so loved by fans, they still perform from time to time even though the members have moved on to other projects. Yesterday, we posted our latest Art Of The Sit-In column featuring Barraco in which he revealed Lesh’s original aim of reuniting the group four times each year. While that hasn’t quite happened, it had us pining for the glory days of The “Q.”

For today’s Full Show Friday selection we set the JamBase time machine for July 28, 2001. On that date the Phil Lesh Quintet shared a bill with the great Willie Nelson in Camden, NJ. Willie sat in with The “Q” for takes on “Uncloudy Day” and “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad” at the end of the first set, while the second set is an improv-heavy journey through Grateful Dead classics and covers of “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and “She Said, She Said.” Thankfully for our sakes, professionally-shot footage of nearly the entire show (the “Passenger” encore is missing) is available on YouTube. Check out this playlist featuring both sets:

Set One: Jam > The Wheel > All Along The Watchtower, Doin’ That Rag, Uncloudy Day*, Going Down The Road Feeling Bad*

Set Two: Jam > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Mason’s Children > Dark Star > Days Between > Dark Star > She Said, She Said > The Other One > Shakedown Street
