Full Show Friday | Jazz Is Dead Norfolk 1998

Widespread Panic guitarist Jimmy Herring and Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia crossed paths again this week when Herring picked on Garcia’s Travis Bean TB500 guitar during Panic’s soundcheck in Spokane, Washington. Jimmy and Jerry have intertwined on many occasions throughout the former’s career, with Herring having played in several iterations of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh’s Phil & Friends lineups, and in 2003 joining Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann in The Dead. Prior to playing in those groups, Herring was also a founding member of Jazz Is Dead, an instrumental jazz fusion group originally composed of drummer Billy Cobham, bassist Alphonso Johnson and keyboardist T Lavitz.


The short lived group project released three albums between 1998 and 2001, but after several lineup changes the band called it quits. Below is video of the complete Jazz Is Dead show from The Boathouse Norfolk, Virginia on November 7, 1998. Toward the end of the set Herring’s Aquarium Rescue Unit band mate, bassist Oteil Burbridge, joins the band for a take on “Dark Star.”
