It was announced earlier this week that Col. Bruce Hampton will reunite the Aquarium Rescue Unit for a run of shows this summer. Joining the Colonel will be bassist Oteil Burbridge, guitarist Jimmy Herring, drummer Jeff Sipe and keyboardist Matt Slocum for the first ARU shows since they reunited in 2011. The 14-date summer tour kicks off July 29 with two nights at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado and finishes up August 16 at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York. We’ve teed up a soundboard recording of ARU’s March 18, 1994 show from Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse as a refresher and example of the group’s prowess in the live setting.

Taped by Steve Washick and transferred by Bill Graves, the SBD recording features 17 songs including over 10 minute long takes on “Time Is Free” and “Elevator To The Moon.” The show also showcased several top-notch guest appearances, including guitarist Drew Emmitt and banjoist Mark Vann of Leftover Salmon, keyboardist John Medeski and drummer Billy Martin of Medeski, Martin & Wood and legendary guitarist Tommy Cash. The cover of Sun Ra’s “Space Is The Place” with Medeski and Martin sitting in is a must hear set closer.
