Last night Widespread Panic took to the stage for their first of two scheduled headlining slots at the Peach Music Festival at Montage Mountain in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Yesterday’s action also featured performances from Umphrey’s McGee, Galactic, Rusted Root, The Record Company and more. Night one saw the Southern-jam titans offer up a lengthy one set, two hour show that saw them welcome a pair of guests to the stage.

The Athens-based band opened the night with a trio of old-school Panic tunes “Henry Parsons Died,” “Love Tractor” and “You Got Yours.” From their the six-piece act offered up their first covers of the night with the traditional pairing of ZZ Top’s “Waiting For The Bus” > “Jesus Just Left Chicago,” from their 1973 album Tres Hombres. Next up was a monster seamless run that kicked off with JoJo Hermann’s “Big Wooly Mammoth,” and segued into “Pilgrims” > “Party At Your Mama’s House” > “Ribs & Whiskey” and a stand alone “Cease Fire.”

John Bell & Co. next welcomed their first guest of the night, as 14-year-old guitar wiz Brandon “Taz” Niederauer joined the band on stage for the first time ever. With Taz in tow, Panic kicked into “Surprise Valley,” which featured an impressive solo from the teenage guitarist early on that got big cheers from the crowd. A “Drums” segment followed with Taz returning to the stage to finish off “Surprise Valley.”

Following that Widespread Panic brought out Marcus King next to join them on a pair of covers. King had previously sat-in with them earlier this year at the Wanee Festival for a version of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Mountain Jam.” This time around the blues singer-guitarist teamed up with them for a take on Robert Johnson’s “Me And The Devil Blues” and the Talking Head’s “Life During Wartime.” Panic closed out the night with their third cover in a row, with their take on Warren Zevon’s “Lawyers, Guns & Money.”

Widespread Panic returned to the stage tonight to close out the 2017 edition of the Peach Festival.
