Widespread Panic continued their Fall Tour Saturday night with a stop in Asheville, North Carolina for a performance at US Cellular Center. The show featured a number of tour debuts as well as a bust out song performance as part of back-to-back Warren Zevon covers to close the first set.
A performance of “And It Stoned Me” opened the show with the Van Morrison staple followed by his “Send Your Mind.” The set progressed with WSP offering takes on “Dyin’ Man,” “All Time Low,” “Bear’s Gone Fishin’” > “I’m Not Alone” and “Shut Up And Drive” before they broke out a cover of “Werewolves of London.” The Zevon original had not been played by the band in nearly a year, last covering it 70 shows ago on October 27, 2015. Another Zevon favorite, “Lawyers, Guns, And Money,” was played for the first time this tour to close out the first set.
“Wondering” started set two and a couple songs later Panic delivered the first “Gimmie” of the the Fall Tour, opening a seamless sequence that swung into “Bust It Big” > “Driving Song” > “Papa’s Home.” A percussive “Drums” breakdown preceded the tour’s first cover of “Maggot Brain,” which transitioned into an exploratory “Imitation Leather Shoes” before moving back to wrap up “Driving Song.” A move to “Red Hot Mama” brought about the end of the second set. A trio of tour firsts made up the encore with WSP pumping out “Dream Song” ahead of two ZZ Top classics, “Waitin’ For The Bus” and “Jesus Just Left Chicago,” which drew the evening to an end.
