On Saturday night the Tedeschi Trucks Band finished off the first half of a non-traditional four-night run at the Warner Theatre in Washington D.C. The Southern rock and soul ensemble decided to split their time in our nation’s capital over the course of two weekends at the historic 1,800-plus capacity venue with a pair of shows this weekend and two more this coming Friday and Saturday. Last night the band offered up a two-set ‘Evening With…’ format delivering their patented mix of originals and covers.

The band opened things up by highlighting their own material as they kicked things off with “Anyhow” from 2016’s Let Me Get By. “Do I Looked Worried” from 2013’s Made Up My Mind proceeded “All The World,” which the band debuted last fall. Tedeschi Trucks Band next paired Taj Mahal’s “Leaving Trunk” with Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s “Volunteered Slavery” giving the band their first chance to stretch their legs a bit. “Ball And Chain” from the band’s 2011 release Revelator gave Susan Tedeschi and vocalist Mike Mattison chance to show off their soulful side. TTB brought their first frame to an end with a killer 19-plus minute take on “Idle Wind” that showcased all the diverse parts of the band.

The meaty ensemble got their final set of the weekend underway by getting a little funky with a must-hear take on Stevie Wonder’s “Love Having You Around” from 1972’s Music Of The Mind. Neil Young’s “Alabama,” Derek Trucks Band’s “Get What You Deserved” and “Color Of Blues” the George Jones tune that Susan recorded with John Prine for his duets record For Better, or Worse helped fill out the mid-portion of the set. The back end of the evening saw them dig in on newish original “Shame,” which was followed by jammed-out takes on B.B. King’s “How Blue Can You Get?” and their own “I Want More” before closing things out with Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice.” Tedeschi Trucks Band brought their first weekend in D.C. to an end with a two-song encore offering up the traditional tune “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” and an extended take on what has become one of their signature songs “Bound For Glory.”
