Full Show Audio: moe. Welcomes Mike Gantzer In Albany

Jam stalwarts moe. returned to an important city in their history, Albany, on Friday night for the first of two shows at The Palace Theatre. When moe. decided to leave Buffalo, the city where they were formed, they were thinking of moving to Brooklyn, but instead chose Albany. The band grew into a nationally-touring act during their time living in Albany and the city will always hold a special place in moe. history. Friday’s concert was their first in the region since bassist Rob Derhak’s cancer diagnosis, the group’s subsequent hiatus and now moe.’s return following an all-clear for Rob.

moe. continued to roll out original material they hadn’t performed since their return to the stage a few weeks ago in Port Chester, New York. Other than two new songs debuted in Port Chester, the quintet focused on tunes they didn’t play in Port Chester or last weekend in Maine. The instrumental “Jazz Wank” served as the opener and led into a “Skrunk” > “Down Boy” > “Tailspin” sequence that saw each song kind of melt into the next. Next up was the recently-debuted “I Can Never Remember” along with “Blue Jeans Pizza.” Then, moe. brought out guitarist Mike Gantzer of opening act Aqueous to duel with Chuck Garvey on a strong “Waiting For The Punchline.”

“Deep This Time” was the second set opener and was followed by “New York City.” Derhak asked why they had never written a song about Albany and the band quickly gave writing a song about Albany a shot before starting “What Can I Say,” the other original debuted in Port Chester earlier this month. A short “Hi & Lo” led into “Montego,” which gave way to one of the improvisational highlights of the night, a sequence of “Captain America” > “She” > “Happy Hour Hero.” Derhak’s solo within “She” was a memorable moment as moe. extended the song well past 20 minutes. The group said farewell with an encore of “Downward Facing Dog.”
