Full Show Audio: Ghost Light Makes Live Debut

It’s not often a new project makes their debut in front of a capacity crowd, but that is indeed what went down when Ghost Light took the stage on Tuesday night at WinstonsOB in the Ocean Beach neighborhood of San Diego. Ghost Light features guitarists Tom Hamilton and Raina Mullen, pianist Holly Bowling, drummer Scotty Zwang and bassist Steve Lyons. A soundboard matrix recording of the band’s live debut surfaced.

The five-piece kicked off the night and their live career with a pair of originals. Ghost Light has tentatively named the tunes as “Come Apart” and “If You Want Me.” Both songs were open-ended featuring impressive jams that show off a chemistry among the group’s members. “Come Apart” spanned 17 minutes, while “If You Want It” lasted nearly 20. The first cover Ghost Light performed was a Dead tune, “Eyes Of The World.” Both Tom and Holly have an extensive history with the song from his time in Joe Russo’s Almost Dead and her version of “Eyes” she did for our Songs Of Their Own series.

Ghost Light’s debut set rolled on with the funky and soulful original “Diamond Eyes” ahead off a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “100 Years Ago.” The quintet then pulled from Hamilton’s Brothers Past repertoire for “Boy.” Next up was the evening’s final Ghost Light original, “Lead Weight,” which saw the group explore various psychedelic soundscapes. Ghost Light concluded their debut set with “Synth Driver” from Tommy’s American Babies project and encore with a powerful rendition of the Derek & The Dominos’ gem “Keep On Growing.”

The inaugural Ghost Light tour continues at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California on Friday and Saturday nights.
