On Wednesday night Brooklyn Bowl in New York City hosted a benefit for Grateful Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow, who has spent the last two years in “medical incarceration” battling a bevy of maladies. An all-star lineup came together for The Songs Of Barlow to aid the house band of Grahame Lesh, Ross James, Alex Koford and Scott Padden. A crispy soundboard matrix of the show recently surfaced. All proceeds from the concert went to the John Perry Barlow Wellness Trust.
DJ Logic spun both before the show and during the setbreak. Highlights from the first set included Eric Krasno, Leslie Mendelson and Jon Graboff helping out the house band on “Cassidy,” Graboff and Katie Jacoby on “Black Throated Wind” as well as Jacoby, Amy Helm, and Karina Rykman sitting-in on “The Music Never Stopped.”
Brooklyn Bowl’s Peter Shapiro talked about the importance of John Perry Barlow and introduced the lyricist’s daughter Amelia Barlow to talk about her dad. A video showing JPB discussing his health was displayed before the second set started with an impressive “Feel Like A Stranger” featuring outstanding contributions from Krasno and Jackie Greene. Many of the evening’s guests contributed to “I Need A Miracle” and “Looks Like Rain” before Greene led the house band on “Estimated Prophet” and “Hell In A Bucket.” Both Jacoby and Greene added to the “Let It Grow” set-closer, while a guest-heavy “Throwing Stones” served as the encore.
