Full Set Video: Phil Lesh Teams With Cass McCombs, Grahame Lesh, Alex Koford & Ross James

On Tuesday night, Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh continued a series of free “Dead Of Winter” shows at the Bar inside Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California. Phil’s band featured guitarists Cass McCombs, Ross James and Grahame Lesh as well as drummer Alex Koford. Video of the entire set has surfaced thanks to Deadheadland.
While three guitarists were “on stage,” the axemen did a good job of staying off each others’ toes and providing layers of sound similar to what a keyboardist would provide. McCombs shined throughout the set, leading the group on “Fire On The Mountain” to open ahead of a Grahame-sung “Me & My Uncle” and gorgeous “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo.” Next, Ross James stepped into the spotlight to sing “Mississippi” before Cass then showed off his songwriting on his own “Sooner Cheat Death Than Fool Love.”
The set rolled on with a Cass McCombs-sung cover of “Are You Experienced” by Jimi Hendrix. Phil then had his turn on lead vocals for the Grateful Dead classic “Friend Of The Devil.” McCombs and Grahame Lesh went on to share vocals on the traditional “Long Black Veil” ahead of a set-closing rendition of “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.” The Dead Of Winter run continues tonight at Terrapin.
