Frank & Gail Zappa Personal Items To Be Auctioned Off In November

Julien’s Auctions has announced a new auction titled Property From The Estate Of Frank & Gail Zappa that will feature items from the Zappa family home in Laurel Canyon going up for bid on Friday, November 4. In keeping with the lines drawn in an ongoing feud among Frank and Gail’s children, Diva and Ahmet are all for it while Moon and Dweezil aren’t pleased.

The Los Angeles Times spoke with both Moon and Dweezil about their issues with the auction. Dweezil worries the guitars his father gifted him, while Gail took back after Frank’s death, will be put up for sale. While a complete listing of the items to be auction has yet to be shared by Julien’s, so far there is no indications FZ’s guitars are part of the haul. “I do not agree with the auction,” Moon Zappa told the Los Angeles Times months ago. “I don’t want my childhood photos and my baby teeth and my Christmas ornaments and the furniture I grew up with sold to the public. That’s weird.”

So what exactly will be auctioned off? A press release mentions a number of “personal treasures” such as “a Venetian gilt metal chandelier (Estimate: $10,000-$15,000); an Italian Baroque console table (Estimate: $2,000-$4,000); and a carved gilt wood bookcase (Estimate: $1,500-$2,500). Contemporary fine art to be offered includes a still life by John Alexander (Estimate: $3,000-$5,000); a nail relief sculpture by Robert Harley (Estimate: $5,000-10,000); and a large painting by Ashley Laurence titled “Angel Pig,” a name given by Gail Zappa (Estimate: $3,000-$5,000).”

There are also a bundle of items documenting Frank’s legendary career including a GRAMMY nomination plaque, a clay Thing-Fish model, a collection of hotel keys from FZ’s travels, items worn by Frank both on-stage and in the movie 200 Motels as well as a collection of career related awards presented to the guitarist/composer. We’ll see exactly what is included when Julien’s unveils the full list of items up for auction in the coming weeks.
