Foo Fighters performed Mountain’s “Mississippi Queen” on The Howard Stern Show. Foo frontman Dave Grohl dedicated the song to Mountain guitarist Leslie West, who died on December 23, 2020.
Grohl also dedicated the song to Stern himself, who was a huge fan of West’s with the guitarist appearing on the show a number of times. “He was my hero,” Stern said in his tribute to West in January. “I was in high school, I was a loser, I was lonely and no one wanted to be friends with me. I would sit in my room listening to [Mountain’s music] over and over again.”

Grohl also detailed his connection with West, which came just days before Leslie died. Last holiday season saw Grohl and Foo Fighters producer Greg Kurstin conducting their The Hanukkah Sessions video series where they released a song from famous Jewish musical artists each night of Hanukkah. Night three saw the duo covering Mountain’s “Mississippi Queen” in honor of West, who was Jewish. As Grohl recounts in the Howard Stern “Mississippi Queen” video, West was impressed with The Hanukkah Session, prompting a call to Grohl from West’s.
