Flashback | Beck & Flaming Lips On Austin City Limits 2002

In honor of today’s news that Beck will finally return to Austin City Limits, we wanted to look back at the singer-songwriter’s last visit to the long-running music television program. For Beck’s 2002 ACL performance, as well as a theater tour, Hansen enlisted The Flaming Lips as his backing band.

In 2002 Beck was touring behind the melancholy Sea Change, the critically-acclaimed album that includes such standout tracks as “Golden Age” and “Guess I’m Doing Fine.” The mellow material was in stark contrast to the usually joyful and rambunctious music of the Flaming Lips. However, we think the pairing worked well for the most part, though Wayne Coyne was not very kind to Beck in statements made after the tour.

We’ve put together a playlist of clips from Beck and the Flaming Lips 2002 appearance on Austin City Limits. We especially dig the ensemble’s performances of “Golden Age,” “Tropicalia,” “Loser” and “Where It’s At.” Beck even shares the story behind “Loser” after being goaded by Coyne. Check it out:

Cold Brains, Guess I’m Doing Fine, Sunday Sun, Side of the Road, Magnolia, One Foot in the Grave, The Golden Age, Lord Only Knows, Tropicalia, End of the Day, It’s All In Your Mind, We Live Again, Lonesome Tears, Loser, Already Dead, Happy Birthday, Little One, Round The Bend, Lost Cause, Sissyneck, Where It’s At, Paper Tiger, Nicotine & Gravy
