If there is a single word that describes the reason Baltimore four-piece Pigeons Playing Ping Pong seem to play to bigger crowds each time they return to a city it’s “fun.” Pigeons don’t take themselves too seriously and provide a fun dance party with each live performance. In these serious times, many live music fans appreciate the joyous escape Pigeons Playing Ping Pong provide. So it’s only fitting the opening track of the band’s new album, Pizazz, is titled “Fun In Funk.” JamBase is pleased to premiere “Fun In Funk” ahead of the release of Pizazz on October 20.
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong will issue the 11-track effort on digital and CD via The SRG-ILS Group with a vinyl release to follow. The album marks the group’s first with their new drummer Alex Petropulous. Although some of the tunes on Pizazz have been live staples for years, the band feels Petropulous has breathed new life into them. “His style and energy have revealed nooks and crannies that we didn’t even realize existed in the tracks. All music boils down to having a good drummer, especially in our dance-oriented jam world, and we’ve got the best drummer I’ve ever heard right now,” said guitarist Greg Ormont. PPPP laid down the album at Wright Way Studios in their hometown of Baltimore. The foursome tapped a horn section of Mario D’Ambrosio and Danny Davis to contribute to “The Liquid” and “Doc.”
“Fun In Funk” is the opening track on Pizazz and shows off the band’s electro-funk sound. “This song describes what we’re all about…the fun, the funk, and the feeling we get playing our music for the people we love,” said Ormont. “Fun In Funk,” like all 11 tracks on the LP, are credited to Pigeons Playing Ping Pong as a band. Pizazz is currently available for pre-order via the band’s website.
