Nicklas Sørensen: Solo

Regular readers will know that I don’t like to go too long without featuring some psychedelic/jammy music from northern Europe, so here’s the first doubleshot of the year and, unless plans change, I’ll be back next week with two more. I begin with a label that’s been a RecommNed mainstay, El Paraiso, whose latest offering is a solo record from Nicklas Sørensen, the guitarist from Papir. Entitled simply Solo, which is also basically the name of every track on the album, Sørensen explores areas not quite as heavy-duty as he does with his regular trio. Each piece feels like an improvisational exercise (jamtudes?), in much happier, major-key vibes. Some tracks soar higher than others, but it’s all the work of a highly skilled guitarist and improviser and all quite good.
Electric Eye: Different Sun

Moving from Denmark to Norway, we find the excellent new album from psych-rock outfit Electric Eye. On Different Sun, these guys hit all the trip-out sweet spots, with guitar-sponsored jam-outs, sci-fi effects and locomotive rhythms. Like a modern day Pink Floyd, if you did deep into these Oslo jams you find an appropriated blues music that’s been drugged-up and dressed-down into another thing altogether. It’s kind of got that hazy drone thing going on, but somehow triumphant with energy at the same time. Highly recommended.
