Thursday marked the first official day of the 2018 Wanee Festival at the Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida. One of the most anticipated sets of the event took place on the Mushroom Stage as New Orleans-based funk outfit Dumpstaphunk presented a Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute entitled “Dumpsta Sugar Phunk Magic.”
Ivan Neville & Co. wound up working eight Red Hot Chili Peppers songs from 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik into their set as per Live For Live Music’s report. L4LM states the RHCP covers came during the back-half of Dumpstaphunk’s performance.
With two bassists, Nick Daniels and Tony Hall, Dumpstaphunk were well set up for the Chili Peppers’ songs. The band has a relationship with the RHCP that saw Flea contribute to 2013’s Dirty Word. Ivan Neville also sat-in with the Chili Peppers, as did George Porter Jr. and Zigaboo Modeliste, during the SoCal rockers set at the 2016 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on “Give It Away.” Not only did Dumpstaphunk perform “Give It Away” at Wanee, they also covered “My Lovely Man,” “Mellowship Slinky In B Major,” “The Righteous & The Wicked,” “Suck My Kiss,” “Funky Monks,” “If You Have To Ask” and “The Power Of Equality.”
