Duane Trucks & Rocky Lindsley Fill-In For Gov’t Mule’s Matt Abts In Asheville
By Andy Kahn Dec 10, 2016 • 8:20 am PST
As reported, last night Warren Haynes hosted the 18th Pre-Jam at the Orange Peel in Asheville, North Carolina. The event that previews tonight’s Christmas Jam at U.S. Cellular Center featured a guest-filled performance by Haynes’ band Gov’t Mule whose drummer Matt Abts was absent due to a family emergency.
With Abts out, drummers Rocky Lindsley and Widespread Panic’s Duane Trucks split duties behind the kit. Joining Mule and Lindsley after the opening “Hammer & Nails” were Mike Barnes on “Almost Cut My Hair,” as well as Ike Stubblefield on “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” and Mark Mullins & The Levee Horns joining everyone on “Soulshine.”
Trucks then took over with additional guests Smoky Greenwell and Bob Margolin along with Mullins & The Levee Horns for “The Same Thing,” “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” and “Smokestack Lightning.” Trucks, Mullins and the horn section also were on hand for the encore performance of “Goin’ Out West.”
Other performers that appeared last night included Bob Weir, Tom Hamilton’s American Babies, Jamey Johnson & Alison Krauss, The Marcus King Band and a group featuring Eric Krasno, George Porter Jr., Danny Louis and Terence Higgins. The sold-out 28th annual Christmas Jam takes place tonight at U.S. Cellular Center. A webcast is available from nugs.tv.
