One of the more unusual sets to take place at a music festival this summer went down this afternoon at Outside Lands in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, where Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem made their “live” debut. The Muppet Show house band “performed” a five-song set included a mix of classic rock and indie rock covers as well as an original.
In a feat of puppeteering and production Dr. Teeth, Floyd Pepper, Janice, Animal, Zoot and Scooter “played” before a large crowd assembled at the Lands End stage. Up first was “Can You Picture That?” from 1979’s The Muppet Movie. Sketches were aired on the large screens in between songs including one that told the origin story of the group which apparently was formed after a chance meeting in The Haight.
The set continued with covers of The Mowgli’s “San Francisco,” Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros’ “Home” and The Band’s “Ophelia.” Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem then brought out the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir for a Joe Cocker-esque rendition of The Beatles’ “With A Little Help From My Friends.”
