Dogs In A Pile returned to Nashville’s Basement East on Thursday for their fourth concert at the venue in the past two years. Moon Taxi keyboardist Wes Bailey made a surprise guest appearance halfway through the second set.

The band — guitarists Jimmy Law and Brian Murray, keyboardist Jeremy Kaplan, bassist Sam Lucid and drummer Joey Babick — kicked off the first set by linking fan-favorites “Westward” and “Little Things.” An adventurous “Look Johnny” followed before “Happy Song” and “Ugly Song” paved the way for a well-jammed “Go Set.”

DIAP took the tempo down for “Men Of Steel” and worked through the funky “Bent Strange.” Kaplan then shined on a set-closing cover of Elton John’s “Bennie and the Jets.”

The Asbury Park-based jam quintet launched the second set with “You Didn’t Hear It From Me.” Next came a take on the Grateful Dead classic “Dupree’s Diamond Blues” that bled into “G Song.”

Dogs In A Pile continued last night’s second set by bringing out Nashville’s own Wes Bailey to take over keyboard duties from Jeremy Kaplan on Stevie Wonder’s “Boogie On Reggae Woman.” Bailey took a furious piano solo before ceding the stage back to Kaplan in time for a ripping “Lucia’s Secret.” A pairing of the recently debuted original “Burning Daylight” and staple “Power Trip” ended the set.

The full-band premiere of the Murray-penned “Lazy Susan” got the encore underway. Dogs In A Pile punctuated the night with the Ween-esque “Mr. Tooker.”
