An interview with The Disco Biscuits keyboardist Aron Magner is featured on the latest episode of JamBase partner Osiris Media’s Inside Out With Turner And Seth podcast. Magner discussed life during the pandemic, new Disco Biscuits songs, his recently released The Ambient Mode EP and more with hosts Rob Turner and Seth Weiner.

The conversation took place in a suite at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Georgia during the Disco Biscuits’ two-night stand at the park in July. Aron began by talking about how his pandemic went and all the challenges he faced both as a musician and personally. “I feel I’m not alone in people that developed anxiety and depression and the fear of the unknown and not knowing a path and questioning the path you had previously taken all for naught,” Magner said. He explained how he started work on his ambient EP as a creative outlet and was urged to release the set by his wife.

The keyboardist revealed the Disco Biscuits were planning to play three livestream concerts from an undisclosed location for their New Year’s Run 2020 and had to shut the idea down when bassist Marc Brownstein tested positive for COVID-19. “It would’ve crushed as there was nothing else going on,” Magner stated. “All we’ve had to do with time is to try to think of new and creative and fun ideas to try to do something and then there was always some sort of variable that would get in the way. It was so difficult.”

Talk then turned to Magner’s SPAGA trio featuring Jason Fraticelli and Matt Scarano. “I’ve learned an incredible amount about myself as a musician by playing with music of that caliber,” Aron shared. He explained that while SPAGA plays “jazzier tunes,” he sees the three-piece performing in rooms “where there was a dance party the night before.” Magner added the group is still figuring out whether they want to play in front of seated crowds or not.

The Disco Biscuits debuted a song with the working title “Evolve” during their City Bisco run at The Mann in Philadelphia just prior to Magner’s interview with Turner and Seth. Aron recalled how he wrote the song and shared his excitement for that piece and other new songs the Disco Biscuits have been playing. He spoke about how tDB guitarist Jon Gutwillig recently moved back to Philadelphia which should lead to more collaboration between the pair when it comes to songwriting.

Aron went on to discuss performing in Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann‘s Billy & The Kids. Magner recalled the short time the band had to prep for their Dead On The Rocks shows at Red Rocks in July. The keyboardist explained how much he enjoys hearing Kreutzmann tell stories from his time in the Dead.

Magner also spoke about how the Disco Biscuits were formed and their evolution. Other topics hit upon included the Biscuits’ relationship with Umphrey’s McGee, his time in Conspirator and jamming with Carlos Santana in Hawaii.
