Detective Reviewed Kurt Cobain Case Which Remains Closed

While Kurt Cobain has been gone for nearly 20 years, there’s still a ton of interest in the circumstances surrounding his death. Yesterday, Seattle’s KIRO reported that the Seattle Police had re-opened the case after new evidence emerged. After many outlets picked up on the report, the Seattle Police clarified that the case remains closed.

Seattle Police Department Cold Case Detective Mike Ciesynski had indeed reviewed the case file as he knew there would be intense media coverage with the 20th anniversary of Cobain’s death approaching. What Ciesynski came across were undeveloped rolls of film that were never developed by the case’s investigator. After reviewing the images and additional statements, Ciesynski still agrees with the Seattle Police’s original assessment that the case was indeed a suicide.

Kurt Cobain’s body was found on April 8, 1994 at his Washington home by an employee of an electrical company. The official story is that Cobain died three days prior of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Over the years there have been many theories laid out about what happened to Cobain. In reference to the conspiracy theories, Ciesynski said “They’re all very interesting, I can see why people have questions [about the case], but you can always point to something and say ‘what if.’”

The Seattle PD shared two of the newly-developed images from the crime scene, including the one above showing what appears to be heroin paraphernalia.
