Acclaimed guitarist Derek Trucks was born in Jacksonville, Florida on this date in 2009. The nephew of Butch Trucks formed The Derek Trucks Band at the tender age of 15 and went on to join his uncle in The Allman Brothers Band five years later. Derek teamed with his wife, Susan Tedeschi, to formally launch the Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2010 and the TTB became the sole focus of Trucks’ career in 2014 after The Allman Brothers Band’s final show. JamBase celebrates Derek’s 41st birthday with a look at a Derek Trucks Band concert that took place at the Granada Theatre in Dallas on March 6, 2009 — just over nine months from the group’s final performance — featuring sepcial guest Gary Clark Jr..

The Derek Trucks Band’s March 6, 2009 show in Dallas brought the group’s month-long winter tour in support of Already Free to a close. Derek was backed by the final DTB lineup of vocalist Mike Mattison, multi-instrumentalist Kofi Burbridge, bassist Todd Smallie, drummer Yonrico Scott and percussionist Count M’Butu. Already Free, the group’s last studio album, was released one month prior and went on to win the 2010 Grammy Award For Best Contempory Blues Album after topping the Billboard blues chart and debuting at #19 on the magazine’s Top 200 chart.

Gary Clark Jr. was just 25-years-old when he sat-in with the DTB in Dallas on March 6, 2009 and had yet to sign with Warner Bros, the label that would release his breakthrough debut EP, The Bright Lights, in 2011. Clark Jr. and Trucks dueled on a medley of Allen Toussaint’s “Get Out Of My Life, Woman” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Who Knows” towards the end of the Derek Trucks Band’s main set at the Granada Theater. The medley also featured J.J. Johnson on drums, a year before he would join the fledgling Tedeschi Trucks Band, a tenure that continues through the present.

The Derek Trucks Band’s 15-song performance in Dallas began with “Joyful Noise,” the title track from the group’s 2002 studio album. Next up was a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Down In The Flood” and “Down Don’t Bother Me,” two of four tunes from Already Free played at the Granada. The show also included Joyful Noise tracks “Kam-Ma-Lay,” “Like Anyone Else” and “So Close, So Far Away.” Gary Clark Jr. & J.J. Johnson’s guest appearance was followed by covers of Rogers & Hammerstein’s “My Favorite Things” and Derek & The Dominos’ “Anyday” before the DTB ended the night with an encore featuring “We’re A Winner” by The Impressions.
